Orthodontic treatment uses braces to reposition and straighten teeth.
Teeth can cause all sorts of problems, especially when they are coming through, such as:
> They can be very crowded
> Become stuck between other teeth
> Be missing altogether
> Be in the wrong place.

Straight teeth look great and help you smile with confidence. Orthodontics can improve function and make cleaning easier. This helps keep your teeth and gums healthy for life, provided you look after them.

Fixed braces are cemented onto the teeth and should only be removed by your dentist. Due to the fact they remain in the mouth for the duration of treatment they must be cleaned on a regular basis by the wearer.

Treatment normally takes 6-24 months to complete - depending on the severity of the initial problem. Your fixed appliances will need to be adjusted monthly as the teeth will be moving into their more aligned position. Fixed appliances are designed to be as smooth as possible. However, in a mouth that is it not used to them initial discomfort is not uncommon.

If the appliance rubs your mouth wax is available from us. A small piece of this should be removed and rubbed between your finger and thumb to soften the wax. It should then be applied to the part of the appliance which is rubbing. Your mouth usually adapts to the appliance after a day or two. The discomfort is usually temporary.

After fitting, or after adjustments of the appliance, it is not unusual to experience a little discomfort. We recommend taking some pain killers just in case.

Your appliance should be cleaned by regular brushing around and between the brackets at least three times a day, especially after meals. A fluoride mouth wash is recommended on a regular basis, this is because failure to keep the appliance clean may lead to progressive decay.

Dietary advice for fixed appliances; try to avoid chewy foods as it may get stuck between the braces. It is best to avoid fizzy drinks as they contain acid which can damage your teeth. However, if you do choose to drink fizzy drinks then we recommend drinking through a straw.

Orthodontic treatment can take up to 2 years (occasionally longer) to complete. During this time you will need to attend regularly for appointments (about every 6 weeks).
